Why use Beer, Tallow and Silk?

Pretty much the first question that people ask about our soap is "Why do you use beer?"  and "Why do you use tallow in your soap."  Amazingly enough, nobody has ever asked why we use silk.

Beer has many health benefits for your skin.  The hops in the beer have relaxing properties.  They are skin softeners, and moisturizing too.  The amino acids in the hops lessens skin redness and irritation.  The brewer's yeast has antibacterial properties and my friend said it helped her daughter's acne in just a few weeks.  The grains have a lot of nutrients, but particularly Vitamin B, which helps in moisturizing the skin and also has antioxidents.

Beer makes the soap creamy, and produces an incredible lather (and we all want lather in our soap!).

Tallow has properties similar to human fat, so it is absorbed by the skin very well.  It is a moisturizer.  It contains Vitamins A, D, K, E and B12 which are all beneficial to your skin.  The oleic acid penetrates deep into the skin.  The stearic acid repairs damaged skin.  It is antibacterial and will not clog your pores.

Tallow makes the soap have a rich, creamy lather.  It also produces a hard bar, so it does not turn into a pile of gush after a week in the shower.

The silk.  Well, it's silk and it makes the soap feel incredibly silky and smooth.  For me this is the winning combination for my soap recipe.
